This isn't part of the model or anything, but just that I was trying to wrap my head around the meter-or-so-long, sausage style missiles you mentioned. So, for my own sanity I have visualized one such type.
You will notice that the manoeuvring thrusters are folded in line with the body of the missile when in the launch tube. Just after firing they spring out and lock in the extended position where they both steer the missile as well as add to the total thrust. The rest is the usual boring arrangement: warhead at the front followed by fuel and electronics.
