Ignatz,
I see your point about wasted space. One way to use it up might be for each frame to have six short boxes that slot in on either side of the locking tower, while the other spaces get full-sized boxes that meet in the middle. Over all, it's less cargo space per trip, but the simplicity of form means there's less time waiting for odd lots of freight to show up that can be fitted in here and there. Would that make it more attractive as a hauling solution? I don't know.
Realistically, there could be many types of hauler frames; I imagine that both designs, and many more besides, could be in active use. Freight cars on a train all follow a similar base design path, yet the variety of them out there is nearly endless. I'm not saying we need imagery to support them all, of course, just that there may not be a right or wrong here. I truly am fine with whatever preference you have.

David,
Using six short boxes is a good compromise solution. Hey, most of the viewers won't know the difference to think about it or even ask. I'll put that one together and get you another concept render.
Cheers,
